About this event

Craniotomy is a standard procedure in the daily practice of neurosurgery, and most neurosurgery residents are exposed to this technique during their second year of training. Acquiring competence in cranial approaches before performing the procedure for the first time in the operating room is an educational objective associated with improved clinical outcomes. There is growing recognition across surgical specialties that mastery of a skill requires repeated, frequent, and consistent practice in order for the trainee to demonstrate safe and efficient independent performance. Training on fresh-frozen anatomical specimens is highly relevant throughout neurosurgical residency and for newly qualified specialists.

We value personalization and, therefore, provide only 4 workstations with a maximum of two participants per station, with access to all the materials and equipment required to perform these techniques. In this way, we ensure individualized learning, maintaining an instructor-to-participant ratio of 1:2, while dedicating more than 95% of the time to hands-on activities using anatomical specimens.

This unique two-day course is focused on dissection and centres on mastering a variety of cranial approaches in neurosurgery, ranging from basic to complex, including: bilateral frontobasal; pterional and orbitozygomatic; subtemporal and anterior petrosectomy (Kawase); posterior petrosectomy (presigmoid) and combined approaches; retrosigmoid; and far lateral approaches.

Recipients:

Residents or Phisicians (Neurosurgery).

Main Goals
By the end of the course, participants should be able to acquire competencies in cranial approaches before performing the procedure for the first time in the operating room, an educational objective associated with improving clinical outcomes.
